Optimist Club’s annual Great Kenosha Pizza Bake-Off coverage
The Kenosha Area Noon Optimist Club’s annual Great Kenosha Pizza Bake-Off took place Sunday evening at the UAW Local 72 headquarters, 3615 Washington Road, Kenosha.
Proceeds from the event benefited the club and the Octagon Club at Tremper High School.
Attendees sampled pizzas served from different vendors and voted for their favorite. There also was a panel of celebrity judges that selected a winner in two specialty pizza categories — one for chain restaurants and one for local restaurants. The panel was made up of Chef Tony Mantuano of Kenosha’s Mangia, Kenosha Mayor Keith Bosman, state Rep. John Steinbrink, Boys and Girl Club of Kenosha President Wally Graffen and WLIP Radio Personality Bill Lawrence.
The celeb judges gave first place honors in the specialty pizza-local category to Baker’s Street. Nick-n-Willy’s won first place in the critic’s choice specialty pizza-chain category.
Though their backgrounds were varied, the “judges were all pretty close in their choices,” said Mantuano, whose Chicago restaurant – Spiaggia — is a favorite of President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle.
Carl’s West, a new contestant this year, swept first place in the people’s choice categories of cheese, sausage and specialty pizzas. Over 500 people attended, organizers said.
Here’s are the complete judging results:
- Critics Choice Specialty-Local: Baker Street, first place; Kaiser’s, second place; Good Fellas, third place.

Generous Pizza Bakers Jimanos and Valeo’s were unable to attend the Pizza Bake Off but wanted to help the event so they kindly donated several pizzas to feed all of the kids and volunteers who helped set up and work the event. Thanks to all of the very generous Pizza Makers, the great Judges, hard working volunteers, Miss Kenosha, Miss Milwaukee, DJ Doug, the Klements Racing Sausages, UAW Local 72 and everyone who came out to sample the pizza and help Youth in Kenosha! It was a great time!
Thank you for having A & D Entertainment back for a second year to help with this event. We are glad that everyone had a good time. Looking forward to next year!
We also want to say thank you to all of the vendors, volunteers, and to all of the other businesses that donated items to the silent auction. All the hard work goes for a great cause.
