At the Public Safety and Welfare meeting held on Monday night, Chief of Police John Morrissey gave the committee a report on the 2011 Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) and the purchases that will be made by both the Kenosha Police Department and the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department as a result of the funding.  Historically, the money has been split 60/40 between the two departments, and this year, the same agreement has been reached.  The total grant funding for this year is $47,177.  Here is a list of items that will be purchased by each department:

Kenosha Police Department – Total:  $28,307

  • Fifteen laptop computers
  • Six LED emergency lighting units (motorcycle)
  • Six handheld radar units
  • One radar certification base unit
  • Twenty-one taser digital power magazines (batteries)

Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department – Total:  $18,870

  • Five automated external defibrillators
  • One boat console cover
  • Six nylon holsters
  • Six nylon duty belts
  • Six mustang float coats
  • Four inflatable personal flotation devices
  • Seventy LED flashlights

Alderperson Anthony Kennedy questioned the chief about the certifiability of the KPD officers in regards to the radar certification unit.  The chief’s response was that the force does have a person certified to do calibration and two officers certified to perform repairs.  The chief felt that there was no exposure in relation to the officers performing the calibrations versus sending the units out for calibration.

The committee unanimously approved the program by a vote of 3 to 0 (Alderperson Rocco LaMacchia had stepped out of the room and was not present for the vote).
