Pleasant Prairie PD “Click It or Ticket” effort yields citations
Pleasant Prairie Police officers issued 37 citations for failure to fasten safety belts during the annual “Click It or Ticket” mobilization between May 21 and June 3.
While intensifying their safety belt enforcement for “Click It or Ticket,” officers also issued citations and made arrests during traffic stops for the following:
- 68 speeding violations.
- 27 operating after revocation or suspension violations.
- 5 traffic sign or traffic light violations.
- 10 drunken driving arrests.
- 2 drug arrests.
- 1 felony arrest.
- 1 warrant arrest.
“Our goal during ‘Click It or Ticket,’ and for the rest of the year, is not to issue more citations, but to persuade people to voluntarily make the responsible decision to buckle up every trip, every time,” said Pleasant Prairie Police Chief Brian Wagner. “We hope that our safety belt enforcement and education efforts will increase voluntary compliance with the mandatory safety belt law, so that we can eventually reduce the number of preventable traffic deaths to zero in Wisconsin.”

The problem with Click It or Ticket is that officers often lie. They say things like “You just put the seatbelt on when I pulled you over.” I had a car with an automatic shoulder strap. There is no way it could have not been on, yet I was pulled over for supposedly not wearing a seatbelt. It was dismissed when I explained there was no possible way I could not have been wearing it. We should not have a law that enforces something that can’t be detected by someone outside of the car. The law is often used as an excuse to run peoples drivers licenses or check for insurance. Click It or Ticket just encourages abuse of the law by police officers.
