Cartooning at the Kenosha Public Museum

“Pearls Before Swine,” by Stephan Pastis

There is a new exhibit preparing for viewing by the name of “More Than Funny:  Cartoons and Comics from the Kenosha Festival of Cartooning.”  This will be on display in the South Gallery from September 8th through September 28th, 2012.

Cartoons and comics from the following artists are included:  Dave Coverly, Greg Cravens, Norm Feuti, Stephan Pastis, Hilary Price, and Michael Jantze.

Also, on Wednesday, September 26th, a class will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.  Kids in first through fifth grade will learn to draw and create their own cartoon characters using basic shapes.  Cost of the two-week class is $20 (or $15 for Friends of the Museums).  Advance registration is required.

From Thursday, September 27th, through Saturday, September 29th, the museum will host the Festival of Cartooning.  Join several cartoonists for lectures, panel discussions, and demonstrations as they take participants behind the scenes of nationally known cartoons and comics like, “Speed Bump,” “The Norm,” “The Buckets,” Rhymes with Orange,” “Gil,” and “Pearls Before Swine.”

Lectures will be held from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm on Thursday and from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm on Friday.  Activities running from 10 am to 4:00 pm on Saturday begin with cartoonists drawing in the studio, and end with cartoonist presentations.

Also, on Saturday, September 29th, another workshop is being held from 10:30 am to 12:00 noon.  This workshop is called “Cartooning with the Cartoonists.”  This is the chance of a lifetime for kids to learn about cartooning from some of the artists who draw the cartoons in the newspaper.  Artists include John Hambrock, Greg Cravens, Hillary Price, and Dave Coverly.  One class is open to kids ages 9 through 12, and another for ages 13 to 16.  The cost is $20 (or $15 for Friends of the Museums).  Advance registration is required.

This event is free and open to the public.
