Holiday train display at the Kenosha Public Museum
Today was the opening day of the Holiday Train Display at the Kenosha Public Museum, 5500 First Avenue. The holiday train, sponsored by the Kenosha Garden Railroad Society (formerly G-Scalers Model Train Club), will be on display in the lobby through January 6th, 2013.
The president of the club, Bill Zimmer, is a part-time maintenance man at the museum. He says that he has had a fascination for trains that goes back a long way. “I always had trains – ever since I can remember,” Zimmer said.

Zimmer has had a train display in his front yard for years. The special Christmas display attracted lots of visitors to his Kenosha home. He and his wife, Vida, even hosted an annual open house on a Saturday in December, complete with cookies and hot cider. Donations he received all went to charity. That went on for 13 years until he decided to make a change. “The weather gets to me now,” he said.
During the summer of 2011, Zimmer, 65, switched to a summertime display in his backyard. With the help of his son, grandson and wife, about a fourth of his back yard has been transfofrmed into a 22-by-30 foot garden railroad display with 150 feet of track, G-scale model trains, houses and various other buildings, a tunnel, a bridge, and lots of beautiful blossoms.
Why not stop in at the museum and see the cool display for yourself. And, don’t forget to bring the kids along, too!
